DIY Potting Bench from Vintage Desk: A Budget Patio Styling DIY

DIY· Summer

8 Aug

Sometimes I get the urge to give our outdoor spaces a little love, even though I’m definitely not in my gardening era. I don’t have a green thumb, but I still love the look of beautiful florals and the feeling of a space that’s been “styled” for summer. Our back patio was looking a little… blah, and I wanted something that would make it more inviting without spending too much.

That’s when I remembered the old vintage desk I had tucked away — it used to be in my office, but it had been collecting dust lately. And that’s when it hit me that a DIY potting bench from a vintage desk could definitely be a great way to spruce up our patio space.

Giving an Old Desk a New Life

The thing about this patio space and most specifically this wall near the entrance is it’s tricky to style — too plain to leave empty, but not quite the right spot for plants that need daily attention. The vintage desk was the perfect solution: tall enough to fill the wall, with drawers for storage, and plenty of surface space to decorate.

I started “shopping my house” and gathered what I had on hand:

  • Terra cotta pots (because they look great even without real plants)
  • A couple of vintage watering cans
  • My collection of rusty, chippy garden things
  • Faux florals that can live outside without me worrying about wilting (DIY your own outdoor florals)

Once everything was in place, the desk totally transformed into a cozy little potting bench. It’s functional and pretty — plus, the drawers are now holding my paintbrushes and DIY supplies. (Because let’s be honest, I’m way more likely to be painting furniture than planting flowers.)

Adding charm without adding cost

This whole project was a budget patio styling DIY at heart. I kept the cost low just by repurposing, rearranging, and layering things I already owned. That’s one of my favorite decorating tricks: instead of starting from scratch, start with what you’ve got and give it a twist. For extra coziness, I brought in a couple of Adirondack chairs with soft pillows and set out a big urn of white blooms in the corner. See how I made those here. Suddenly, our patio went from “nothing to see here” to my new favorite place to sit with an iced coffee.

Why i love this project

  • It solved a tricky decorating spot.
  • It gave new life to a piece of furniture I wasn’t using.
  • It added charm and personality while keeping the cost low.

So if you’ve got a plain patio, an unused piece of furniture, and a little creativity, you can totally pull off your own “DIY potting bench from vintage desk” idea. You don’t need a green thumb — just a few decorative touches, a cozy seating spot, and the willingness to think outside the (garden) box.
