Bringing Spring into the Dining Room: A Cottage-Style Guide

Antiques· Dining Room· Spring

6 Jun

There’s no better time to freshen up your home than spring.  For our dining room, I like to keep the spring décor simple and fresh.  After all the holiday gatherings and seasonal decor, I crave simple, light and casual dining. A spring dining room doesn’t have to be overly styled; it’s about embracing what you love and layering in softness and charm.

Here are a few spring dining styling ideas to help freshen up your space:

Lighten Up with Layered Whites

Nothing says “fresh start” quite like a palette of warm whites. There is quite a bit of color and warmth in this room just from the wood floors and furniture alone.  To soften and lighten it up for spring, I layered in various shades of whites.  Keeping the table linens simple and casual, layering white dishes, pitchers and spring florals set the tone making everything feel open and fresh.

Try This: Mix shades like antique white, linen, and bone to avoid a flat look. If you need some texture, add a few baskets or a light knitted throw to keep it from feeling too crisp.

Create a Cottage-Inspired Spring Dining Room Centerpiece

Bring the outside in with simple florals and greenery.  Low-key and beautiful—like this ceramic pitcher filled with faux greenery and a few white blooms adds a little cottage charm.  Paired with a few antique finds, brass candlesticks and your favorite dishes, you’ve got a spring table that looks casually styled.

Try This: If you don’t have faux greens on hand, clip a few branches from the yard or use potted herbs for a fresh alternative.

Add Antique Personality

Add in antique elements to get a curated yet casual feel.  This is our formal dining room, but I didn’t want it to feel formal.  I’ve mixed vintage ironstone with everyday dishes, an antique table with new chippy metal chairs.  Nothing matches perfectly, but everything belongs.

Try This: Mix vintage dishes with new ones. If you’re just starting your collection and it feels sparse, add in new items that blend well.  It fills out your collection and keeps the look casual.

Keep It Functional but Beautiful

This room proves that practicality can be pretty.  We dine in here often, especially for the holidays and special occasions.  It’s not over-styled—it’s ready for real life, but with a soft, thoughtful eye.  Stay tuned, I’m on the look-out for a washable rug, something beautiful, but practical for this room.

Try This: Look for dishes that are pretty enough to be displayed.  Great for everyday use and pretty enough for décor.

spring dining room: Cottage Style that’s Casual

At its heart, cottage style is about comfort, character, and the charm of imperfection. A spring dining room should feel fresh and welcoming, not overly styled. Keep it simple and light by adding in your favorite vintage finds, a few spring florals and layer it up with shades of white.
